RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Water Works Park, Tampa, Florida, Design Direc- tor. Water Works Park, a City of Tampa public park space, is approximately 4.5 acres located just north of I-275 on the east bank of the Hillsborough River. The park is the current northern terminus of Tampa’s Riverwalk and provides a special event space for a variety of programming needs.
This park is notable in location, history and purpose, with an abundance of outdoor recre- ation opportunities. A truly multi-functional public space, it contains a playground for both wet and dry play, an events lawn with a Special Events Pavilion for performances, a dog park, a period gazebo, and a healing garden, all set on along the river at the current Riverwalk terminus. The north park edge features the restored natural spring that once served as the City’s drinking water supply. The shapes of the gabled roofs are modern interpretations of the adjacent historic building’s gabled roof. The shapes begin by repeating the 7:12 sloping geometry of the historic roof, then combine with the simple, pure, repetitive forms of Jap- anese origami to transform into something new. Red brick selected to match the historic building is utilized on the larger structures and throughout the park in seat walls and accents.
Harborview Center, Clearwater, Florida, Design Director. Harbor Center is a ve-phase project. In the rst phase the 51,000 square foot second oor was renovated to house a major retail tenant – Stein Mart. In the remaining phases, the rst and third oors were converted to restaurants, a community center, an exhibit hall, meeting rooms, and conference space, all while the retail tenant remained in operation. Additionally, a new roof and HVAC system (pro- viding separate cooling equipment for each of the ve uses) were added and nearly all other mechanical and electrical systems were replaced. Only the freight elevator and re protection system were salvaged and they had to be updated. Asbestos abatement was conducted, and new re separations were created between spaces of disparate uses. All life safety elements were also upgraded to meet modern code. A new glazed atrium overlooking the Intercoastal Waterway and connecting the upper and lower levels with escalators and elevators was added to create an iconic architectural element. The project was completed in a total of 15 months utilizing a design construction process strongly teaming the Architect/Engineer and the Gener- al Contractor. Operating on a very tight budget, the design team was able to revive what had been a vacant building on the downtown waterfront and turn it into a multi-purpose convention and community event center.
