sometimes against their will. Also, many customs of the conquered natives

were prohibited by the Spanish and are now completely forgotten.
Indirect diffusion happens when ideas or culture is transmitted indirectly
from one culture to another. This is especially common these days as the
Internet quickly and easily allows indirect experience of another culture. An

American in New York City, for example, may watch a YouTube video
about Japanese traditional food such as sushi and adopt it as part of his
regular diet. In another example, skateboarding in Africa may become more

popular as a result of people there watching videos of famous skateboarders
in Los Angeles.

Exercise 2 Reading a student essay

Read the reaction essay below as a response to the article of Cultural
Diffusion.

One of the main goals the anthropologists must achieve is to understand
culture, including how culture can diffuse. Published on June 27, 2018, an
article taken from dreamreader.net talks about how cultural diffusion occurs

and what are the types of cultural diffusion. Despite missing one important
aspect, I think the article provides sufficient explanation that aids me in
learning about cultural diffusion.

It seems to me that the author’s quite comprehensive explanation about
cultural diffusion has enabled me to fully grasp the main aspects of the
spread of cultural beliefs and social activities. The article starts with a
definition and the examples of cultural diffusion. By understanding what

cultural diffusion really is and learning the examples of cultural diffusion, I
realize that cultural diffusion is a phenomenon closely related to people’s
lives. Furthermore, the explanation in the last three paragraphs has allowed
me to understand that there are several factors contributing to the

occurrence of cultural diffusion; one of which is the advanced development
of technology, especially the internet. I have come to the understanding that
the internet has an important role not only in its position as a source of
information, but also in the process of how culture spreads from one place
