Relative Clauses
Relative clauses (also called adjective clauses) modify nouns or noun phrases. They
are dependent clauses and must be attached to a main clause.
A relative clause must always follow the noun to which it refers.
There are two types of relative clause: restrictive and nonrestrictive.
Restrictive Relative Clause
A restrictive relative clause gives essential information that helps identify or define
the noun or noun phrase it modifies.
It is the same author who also wrote for another top-selling newspaper in
the world.
In restrictive clauses, use the relative pronouns who or that for people, and
which or that for things or animals.
Do not use a comma between the noun and the relative pronoun.
Nonrestrictive Relative Clause
A nonrestrictive relative clause gives extra information about a noun or phrase.
Walker Evans, who wrote several articles about refugee, is a reputable
journalist for two top-selling newspapers in the world.
In nonrestrictive clauses, use who for people and which for things.
Use commas to separate the clause from the rest of the sentence.
DO NOT use that in a nonrestrictive relative clause.
