On January 10, 1957 Mistral died
from pancreatic cancer. A few days
later her remains were brought to
Chile, and the Chilean government
declared three days of mourning.
Hundreds of thousands of Chileans
grieved and payed their final
respects to their beloved departed
poet.
To this day Mistral, whose image
is on Chile’s 5000 peso banknote,
remains beloved and respected in
Chile and throughout the world.
