La Niña has the opposite effect
of El Niño and literally translates
to mean ‘the girl’. La Niña
results when high atmospheric
pressures and desiccated air
cause cooler sea temperatures
to prevail.
Ocean currents push nutrients
from the ocean floor to higher
sea levels, resulting in an
abundance of food for marine
animals.
