P. 7

El Niño occurs when the Pacific

      Ocean warms, raising the

      average ocean water

      temperature from Ecuador to

the Gulf of Mexico. It coincides

      with Christmas, so Latin

      Americans coined the name ‘El

Niño’, in reference to the birth

      of Christ.

      El Niño literally translates to

      mean ‘the boy’. The torrential

      storms occurring in nearby

      areas can cause flooding,

      hurricanes, and tornados.
