El Niño occurs when the Pacific
Ocean warms, raising the
average ocean water
temperature from Ecuador to
the Gulf of Mexico. It coincides
with Christmas, so Latin
Americans coined the name ‘El
Niño’, in reference to the birth
of Christ.
El Niño literally translates to
mean ‘the boy’. The torrential
storms occurring in nearby
areas can cause flooding,
hurricanes, and tornados.
