So Maui struck himself on the nose

with his fist, causing it to bleed. He

then used his own blood to smear

all over his magic jawbone hook.

He whirled the jawbone of his

ancestors round and round above

his head, before flinging it high and

long from the bow of the canoe.

It dropped like a diving bird into the

vast ocean and plunged through

the depths at great speed.
