1. The Three Kingdoms Era

Before describing King Gwanggaeto,

it is imperative to explain the

historical situation that he faced

during his lifetime. The Korean

peninsula was divided into three

kingdoms, Goguryeo, Bakjae and

Shilla. A few generations before the

birth of Gwanggaeto, the Bakjae

kingdom that was situated at the

southwestern end of the peninsula,

had risen in power and had a

dominant role in the power struggle
