Since the twins originate from
the fertilisation of one egg
by a single sperm,
the two embryos that result
from the split share the same
genetic endowment and tend
to be of the same gender.
They are, therefore,
more alike than fraternal twins.
In rare cases, however,
mutations may impact
the gender of identical twins.
