EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
TPM Biotech Sdn Bhd (TPMB) and Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has agreed on
strategic collaboration to further develop and commercialise knowledge on ultrasonic- 23

assisted extraction for production of value added products for local herbs namely
Eurycoma longifolia (Tongkat Ali), Labisia pumila (Kacip Fatimah) and Ficus deltoidea
(Mas Cotek). These herbs which made of lignocellulose biomass contain high bioactive
components which are important materials to be used in food, nutraceutical,
cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical industry.
Conventional herbal extraction is a time-consuming process of which it takes 12 to 24
hours of process but producing low concentration on product. Eurycoma longifolia,
Labisia pumila and Ficus deltoidea poses covalent bond with lignin and other
carbohydrates, preventing them from any chemical changes and enzymatic reaction. On
that account, knowledge on ultrasonic-assisted extraction is highly needed to increase
the yield and shorten extraction process through breaking the bond and release the
polysaccharide compound for further chemical and enzymatic reaction.
Ultrasonic-assisted extraction poses the potential in increasing the yield and shorten the
processing time for herbal extraction.
