What is Digital Literacy?
st
What it means to be literate has changed in the 21 century. We all know that being literate is
being able to read and write but today, literacy is something much more, now it includes the
ability to navigate on the world’s digital media stream. We need to understand and use
multiple formats from many different sources on our computer, read and interpret the
material that is presented, evaluate it, gain knowledge from it and be able to apply that
knowledge into our own work.

Digital Literacy and Creativity- Introducing the DAOW
Method
We live in an ever changing environment, where computers and the internet have become a
big part of our lives, not least at school where the learning environment has become very
different from the past. More and more people have their own computers and iphones that
can be used for educational purposes. Digital literacy gives us a lot of opportunities to use
creativity in the classroom, both for individual assignments, but also for creative group work.
Jason Ohler (2014) has written a book called: “Digital community - digital citizen“ and in one
of the chapters “Literacy in the digital age“ he explains how our reading has changed from
just words on a page to all kinds of texts and pictures on a screen, which we call a collage. He
encourages teachers to use the so called DAOW method, to mix old and new traditions, mix
digital technology (D), with art (A), oral (O) and written (W) practice. The DAOW method can
be useful for teachers who want to use digital technology to improve their teaching, and it is
also useful for the students. One assignment that could easily mix the four circles, would be to
ask students to draw or do some other graphics to tell a story they have read, or tell their
class about something they’ve seen on the internet and write about it, individually or in
groups.
