Digital Literacy and Creativity- The Curriculum
In the Icelandic National Curriculum digital literacy and creativity are one of the seven pillars
of education. Teachers therefore need to define the essentials skills and the steps that need
to be taken to navigate the students through the Internet. We also need to base our
navigation on the student’s abilities and development. The students need to understand the
benefits and opportunities of technology but also be aware of the dangers it unfolds.
The curriculum should provide the frame for development of digital literacy and teachers
should be able to discuss what it is to be a digitally literate person in each discipline. The
National Curriculum is just the key to ensure that teachers include the subject in learning and
teaching. Teachers can not be excluded from developing digital skills, they also need
opportunities to build and develop new capabilities. Practical methods can be introduced to
determine that both students and teachers are able to use this new technology properly.
Teachers and students can be encouraged to engage and use different tools for dialogue and
evaluation. The schools can develop digital literacy framework to evaluate both skills and
competence. This encourages learners to work together on their projects. Both teachers and
students can be introduced to surveys and activities to ensure their understanding and
support of methods. Reward and recognitions schemes can be introduced. Workshops,
briefings or other short activities can be developed in different levels. Digital literacy can be
developed into professional development of teachers to ensure the student education. Digital
literacy is a lifelong learning that can be transferred between subjects. If the teacher is a
model for both skill and behaviour of digital literacy and creativity in their own life it reflects
to the students and the teacher gains credibility. Show excitement in the new technology and
your interest will affect the students.
