Trucker’s hitch
Once used to lash down the covers on horse-
drawn carts, the trucker’s hitch has many
applications and several different ways of being tied.
The one shown is based on a sheepshank (here) and,
while not the most secure, is the most easily
released. A more permanent version can be made by
using a figure-eight loop or a bowline, but these are
more likely to jam under the loads exerted.
1 Put a bight in the standing part and cross over the working end.
