Racking bend
Most bends are intended to join lines of roughly
similar size and won’t work if they are of
dramatically different size. A typical case aboard a
ship is tying a heaving line to a mooring line, when
even a sheet bend will struggle to cope. The racking
bend is designed for this purpose and can also be
used if a loop is already spliced into the end of the
mooring line.
1 Put a bight into the end of the thicker (or stiffer) line. Pass the working
end of the thin line through the bight and around the standing part of the
thick line.
