Thief knot

The two knots shown below might look identical

but they are tied completely differently. One is a
reef knot, used to reef sails, and the other is a thief

knot, used to tie a ditty bag so sailors could spot if
anyone had tampered with their possessions.

1 Put a bight in one end of the line, and pass the other end through the

bight.
