               Yardarm knot




               This  might  look  like  an  innocent  variation  of  the


               sheepshank,  however,  the  yardarm  knot  fulfils  an
               altogether  more  sinister  function  than  shortening

               lines.  Tied  to  a  yardarm  with  a  noose  at  the  other

               end, it was used to hang people. It can however be

               used in any situation that requires a preset amount

               of line to be released.




























                 1  Put an overhand loop in the standing part. The size of the loop should


                               be about half the distance required for the ‘drop’.
