Yardarm knot
This might look like an innocent variation of the
sheepshank, however, the yardarm knot fulfils an
altogether more sinister function than shortening
lines. Tied to a yardarm with a noose at the other
end, it was used to hang people. It can however be
used in any situation that requires a preset amount
of line to be released.
1 Put an overhand loop in the standing part. The size of the loop should
be about half the distance required for the ‘drop’.
