Ranger beads are like an abacus: the upper tier represent 10 units
each while the lower tier are worth a single unit each. Count off the
lower beads until you reach ten, then count off one of the upper
beads and reset the lower ones. To measure your distance, work out
how many paces you need to walk 100 yards (or metres), and then
count off the beads each time you walk that many paces. You can
then count off the beads, knowing that each of the lower beads
represents 100 yards and each of the upper beads represents 10 x
100 yards.
