This book is dedicated to Betty and Sol, who were great lockdown buddies
A large section of this book was conceived, photographed and written during the 2020
coronavirus lockdown. Big thanks to my models and knot-tying extraordinaires: Graham Moore,
Betty and Sol Compton, Tabitha and Matilda Whates, Jo, Steve, Daisy and Esme Nash, Liv Kisby,
Mitzy the cat, and Winnie the dog. I’d also like to thank Lisa Chell for the bag of ropes, Caroline
Fryer for the bag of macramé string, Anthony Showell for the use of his woods, Kate Farmery for
the rustic table, Steve Warrender for the slate, and Kirstin Jane for the lighter(s). Special thanks to
my wife Anna Compton for all the styling advice and reluctant modelling. As ever, the Ashley Book
of Knots provided a treasure trove of inspiration, as did many of the online tutorials, especially the
Paracord Guild (paracordguild.com) and CbyS Paracord. Thanks too to Dr Colin Byfleet and Ken
Yalden of the International Guild of Knot Tyers, who tied so many of the original studio knots. Last
but not least, thanks to my editor Kathryn Beer for keeping the lines in good order, and my
publisher Elizabeth Multon for allowing us all to get happily tied up in knots.
