Back splice
A quick and effective way of preventing a line
from fraying is to tie a back splice in it. Although this
is usually seen as a temporary measure before
putting in a whipping, there’s no reason not to leave
it in permanently. The only catch is that it does
double the line’s thickness, which can be a help or a
hindrance depending on where it’s being used.
1 Seize the line, allowing about three times the diameter of the line per
tuck. In this case, six tucks using ⅜in (1cm) line: 3 × ⅜in × 6 = 6¾in (3 x
1cm × 6 =18cm).
