Square lashing

Whether you’re lashing things together or

making some kind of improvised shelter, the square
lashing is the one you’ll use most often. Before you

start, though, you’ll need to sort out your wrapping
from your frapping. And you’ll need to revise a

couple of basic knots, namely the timber hitch and

the clove hitch.

1 Tie the end of the line to the lower spar or pole with a timber hitch

(shown) or clove hitch.
