Hard eye splice
Wherever a shackle is attached to the end of a
line, there will be wear on the rope. So, it makes
sense to tie a permanent loop, in the form of an eye
splice, with a metal or plastic thimble inserted to
protect the line. The hard eye splice is widely used
aboard ships for halyards, anchor warps, mooring
lines and more.
1 Tease the strands apart, allowing three times the line’s diameter per
tuck. Four tucks using ⅜in (1cm) line: 3 × ⅜in × 4 = 4 ½in (3 × 1cm × 4
=12cm).
