Sheepshank in the bight
The sheepshank was traditionally used in
sailing to shorten lines without cutting the ends. It
can also be used to bypass a chafed line by placing
the chafed area in the middle of the knot. It is
seldom used nowadays, other than for
entertainment and knot-tying practice.
