               Traditional chain splice

               The traditional chain splice is popular with

               sailors extending the scope of their anchor chain
               with rope to avoid carrying extra weight of chain. A

               conventional eye splice (with or without a thimble) is
               usually too bulky to fit on the anchor winch, but a

               long splice hardly bulks out the line at all.

                1 Seize the line and tease the strands apart, allowing about 40 times the

                  diameter of each line for the splice. In this case, 40 × ⅜in = 15in (40 ×

                                                      1cm = 40cm).
