Traditional chain splice
The traditional chain splice is popular with
sailors extending the scope of their anchor chain
with rope to avoid carrying extra weight of chain. A
conventional eye splice (with or without a thimble) is
usually too bulky to fit on the anchor winch, but a
long splice hardly bulks out the line at all.
1 Seize the line and tease the strands apart, allowing about 40 times the
diameter of each line for the splice. In this case, 40 × ⅜in = 15in (40 ×
1cm = 40cm).
