Knife with Zig-Zag Hitching
8 feet of #36 cotton seine twine used to create the
grip
3 feet of #36 cotton seine twine used to create the
decorative Turk’s Head knots at the top and bot-
tom of the handle
sharp knife or scissors
ruler
masking tape
shellac with brush
For safety’s sake, before you start this project, tape
over the sharp cutting edge of the knife to avoid any
inadvertent cuts. To cover the knife handle with zig-zag
hitching, follow these steps:
A dowel with zig-zag hitching on it.
1 > Tie one end of the 8-foot length of #36 cotton
seine twine tightly around the bottom of the
handle.
2 > Add three rows of single French hitching that lead
to the left side of the handle.
3 > Flip the handle over and add three rows of single
French hitching that lead to the left side of the
handle.
4> Flip the handle back over again and continue to
add hitches in rows of three, flipping the handle
over at the end of each set of three to form a zig-
zag pattern of hitches.
5 > When you have added all the hitches you want, tie
Zig-zag hitching in progress, with a Turk’s Head knot tied off the twine with an overhand knot (or just cut
at the bottom. with an extra tail).
