At this point I should clarify that Salt Lake City high schools

of college preparation. I think this situation illustrates the need for the
judgment of those who are not professional educators or administrators.
During World War I, George Clemenceau, the Premier of France, was
questioned why, as a civilian, he took a major role in France’s military

        clusively to the professional educators.

In the 10 grade, Mr. George P. Unseld taught us physics. He
was a good teacher; many things I have learned in his class have been
valuable all my life. Miss Chugg had transferred to West High and I

ning an “Honor Rating” for its ROTC for more consecutive years than
any other high school in the United States. I enrolled and enjoyed the
marching. When a couple hundred men learned to march and maneuver
with real military precision it was a thrill for me to see and participate.
It is like being a part of a precision ballet or synchronized swim team,
        beautiful to watch.
In this junior year of high school a group of boys and I “jelled”
into a club who studied well, participated in school activities and had
a great time. In the spring of my junior year in high school it was the

body. The judges were adults from outside the school. I was delighted
        to win the Stephens Medal.
My senior year in high school brought to me what seemed like
“tragedy and triumph.” When school started in the fall all senior cadets
