Kali Brandt PhD OSU “Graduate school is is financially emotionally and and mentally draining It is is difficult for even the most determined to complete I I I I love what I I I I do and and knew that this was was the right path yet I I I still struggled The The first hurdle hurdle was was was was financial The The unrestricted ARCS Scholar Award was was was there to help Another hurdle hurdle was was was feeling like my work had no no impact ARCS Oregon encouraged me me and reminded me me that what I do matters My current work focuses on developing techniques to to adapt adapt wheat to to adverse effects These adaptations would increase production despite changing climate emerging pests and decreased water availability ARCS helps graduate students be be passionate and innovative because they feel supported in in every way ”

me to to to travel to to to Denmark as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a visiting scholar to to to learn techniques that were not available at at the University of Oregon I I enjoyed and benefited from these visits to to Denmark so much that I I am now a a a a a a a a a a post-doctoral scholar in in Copenhagen on a a a a a a a a a a a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship working on on understanding the the properties of materials used in in in solar cells Not only did the the ARCS Scholar Award propel my research forward but having such a a a a a a a a a large community of amazing women cheering you you on while working towards your PhD makes a a a a a a big difference during the most stressful times in in in graduate school ”
