The Impact of an ARCS Award
“I am grateful and excited to join a community of scholars and mentors from diverse scientific backgrounds. I look forward to learning from my peers and mentors and bouncing research ideas and solutions off scientists from different fields. What can result from a conversation between a neuroscientist and an environmental engineer? A possible collaboration! Organizations like ARCS that give young scientists from different fields the opportunity to come together are filling crucial roles in facilitating integrative science. I am thrilled by the opportunity to join this community.”
–Juliana Cuartas, OHSU School of Medicine, Neuroscience
“The ARCS Award was a decisive factor in choosing Oregon State University for my PhD program. While many institutions in my field offer attractive financial packages through affiliations with national laboratories and federal funding, the ARCS Award elevates OSU to a highly competitive position. This award aligned with my financial needs and allowed me to collaborate with my preferred advisor, ensuring that I could focus on pioneering research without undue financial stress. The community and support ARCS provides reassured me that Oregon State was the right environment to thrive academically and push the boundaries of scientific innovation.”
–Liam Walker, Oregon State University, College of Engineering, School of Nuclear Science and Engineering
“When it came to choosing a graduate school, expenses became a central issue. Receiving the ARCS Award made the decision easier, allowing me to focus on what drives me toward graduate school in the first place: making a difference in this world using inorganic chemistry. The University of Oregon’s chemistry department has an impressive consciousness of global issues and strives to improve lives using science. In choosing UO, I saw a program that would allow me to work with graduate students and faculty I admire and focus on science that can change our world. The ARCS Award has given me access to UO's progressive and innovative minds and will provide many opportunities to make a difference.”
–Alexandra Bender, University of Oregon, College of Arts & Sciences, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
