"My research focuses on improving how bones heal, especially in relation to surgeries on the face and skull. I study how bone density and mineral content affect the healing process. My goal is to develop better treatment methods for conditions like cleft lip and palate, injuries from accidents, and surgeries for cancer. By gaining a deeper understanding of these biological processes, I hope to enhance therapies that can help patients who need reconstructive surgery. My goal is to become a craniofacial plastic surgeon, combining my research expertise with clinical
practice to provide innovative and compassionate care.
As a Latina in science, I am committed to promoting and advocating for diversity in scientific research. Alongside my commitment to forward-thinking research, I find great joy in empowering the next generation of scientists. For example, my role as
the program coordinator for the Partnership for
Scientific Inquiry, which introduces research to underrepresented high school students in Oregon,
has allowed me to actively champion diversity and
help shape a more inclusive future in science. The ARCS Award inspires me to continue advocating for diversity and excellence in research, with incredible encouragement from my sponsors, Joan Foley and Per Järnberg.
The ARCS Scholar Award has supported my research and academic journey. This financial help has been a blessing, covering essential expenses like travel to national scientific conferences and repairs for my first car. This has relieved financial pressures and allowed me to focus on my academic and professional growth. Being an ARCS Scholar means being part of a community that values and invests in scientific innovation and education, which is incredibly inspiring."
