Policy Regarding CFNF Staff Members
Serving on Boards and Fundraising
Board Service in General:
The Community Foundation expects that from time to time CFNF staff members will be called
upon to serve on Boards of Directors and do work beneficial to the nonprofit and philanthropy
fields. Such service is encouraged but requires prior approval (board approval for the President
and President approval for other staff members). Approval is required primarily for the
following reasons:
a) the Foundation’s unique position as a grantmaker;
b) the Foundation’s desired image as neutral; and
c) time commitments required in any such service.
Notwithstanding the above, approval is not required with regard to the following types of
organizations:
1. The church or religious institution attended by the staff member; and
2. The school attended by the staff member or a child of the staff member.
In all cases, the commitment must not detract from the staff member’s ability to perform his/her
duties over sustained periods of time.
Leadership Position:
Other than for the organizations listed in #1 and #2 above, service in a leadership position on a
board requires prior approval (board approval for the President and President approval for other
staff members). Again, the commitment must not detract from the staff member’s ability to
perform his/her duties over sustained periods of time.
Fundraising:
Since all staff members represent CFNF and CFNF is an asset “attracting” organization, other
than for (a) the organizations listed in #1 and #2 above or (b) de minimis amounts of up to
$1,000 when serving as a board member of other kinds of organizations, staff members may not
raise money for other organizations without prior approval (board approval for the President and
President approval for other staff members).
