Pernambucan Revolution ended in May 1817. Several failed attempts took place over the next
few decades, until Pernambuco officially gained statehood in 1889.
Early on, the Portuguese aristocracy established
Olinda as their administrative seat. During their
occupation, the Dutch built and governed from
Recife, and when the Portuguese regained control
they returned the capital to Olinda. Over time, the
influence of the rich plantation owners in Olinda
diminished and the traders, shippers and

warehousers in Recife gained the power. Recife
officially became the capital city in 1827.

Today, Olinda is listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, and Recife serves as a major air and
              sea gateway, with Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre
International Airport (2004) and the new Passenger

              Terminal (2009) at Recife Port.
