              Rondonia (by Nicole)

              (Map of Rondônia)
Rondônia is one of Brazil’s smaller states,

it only spans a total area of 237,7500
square kilometers but has a relatively large
              population of approximately 1,800,000
people. Rondônia is bordered by Acre,
              Amazonas, Mato Grosso, and Bolivia.
Rondônia was formerly a part of
Amazonas and was then established as
Guaporé territory in 1943. In 1956 it was

              renamed after Marshal Cândido Mariano
da Silva Rondon, an explorer and protector
of Indians. Rondônia officially became a
              state in 1982.

              Deforestation

                (deforestation in the Amazon)

Rondônia is known for being home to a
large portion of the Amazon Rainforest, but
              due to modernization and development,
              deforestation has progressively been
becoming a larger problem for the state of
              Rondônia. The area remained largely
untouched until the 1800s when the
Amazon rubber boom found the state.
After the collapse of the rubber industry,

Rondônia started mining tin and gold and later began to clear large swathes of the rain forest
to develop land for cattle ranches and soy bean farming. Now Rondônia is recognized as being
one of the most vulnerable areas in terms of the depletion of the rain forests thanks to rapid
              deforestation and a large population.
