November Report 2022
Entrepreneurship Scholarship representatives’ annual meeting report (6)
Southeastern Indian Polytechnic Institute
SIPI experienced an enrollment uptick during the early stages of the pandemic, but it has decreased this trimester. Limited space in residence halls and increased rent costs in the surrounding community have had an impact. Business students have been building up the AIBL chapter, and the chapter placed 2nd in this year’s Business Plan Competition. The school is working toward ACBSP accreditation. Most of the scholarship-eligible students this year will be part-time. Like other institutions, the school is having a hard time tracking down graduates but is trying.
University of Alaska – Fairbanks
UAF went to a new system for scholarship applications, and 27,000 applications came through. Now there’s a separate review process for Johnson Scholarship applicants. As a way of recruiting new students, UAF invites high school students to campus for a weeklong academic intensive. Administrators hope the Johnson Scholarship will help bring new students in.
University of North Carolina – Pembroke
The undergraduate student body is 47% low income, 67% rural and 29% first-generation. There were 87 students eligible for the scholarship, and 19 received awards. Because ACBSP is focused on outcomes, the scholarship is in alignment with UNCP’s goals and objectives.
CLOSING MATTERS
Sharon handed out the expense report forms. Lady explained that she will be sending the on-line survey invitation to everyone.
Next meeting = Friday, October 6, 2023 in Scottsdale, Arizona
POST MEETING SURVEY SUMMARY
Entrepreneurship Meeting
The representatives rated all aspects of the meeting highly, from the explanation of program details to hearing what is happening at other schools. With many first-time attendees among the participants, it is not surprising that nearly half, 46%, responded that they wished there was more time to discuss certain topics. Those topics included how schools select applicants and track alumni. Things that would be of interest at future meetings included:
• Best practices
• Student success stories
• JSF’s strategic goals and plans
• Other internship opportunities
• Information about endowment building
