PROGRAM PROGRESS REPORT
I did not hear any significant problems, but I was distracted doing the audit review.
DISCUSS THE STATUS OF THE ENDOWMENT
Brandon said that they were close to raising the match for this year. He said they were about $36,000 short. We learned later that they had raised the money.
DISCUSSIONS WITH STUDENTS
We met with several students, and Bobby interviewed each, and they had fascinating stories. The following is a brief description of the subject.
Eric had worked in construction all of his life and decided to go back to school to the business side of building. He has four children and wants them to have an opportunity to go to college.
Kari was in her second year and from the Yakima Nation. Her husband is also a JSF scholar. They have a 14-year-old daughter, and both work.
Lila works for the tribe’s health department and is the first of her family to attend college. She is an enrolled member of the Lummi Nation, is a single parent, and said, “her children keep her going.”
Kristi has two children, is a single mom, and never believed she would ever be able to attend college. She is now in her third quarter, and she said she now believes in herself and is going to “make something of herself.”
Sarah will graduate this quarter. She works full-time, is a single parent, and has previously dropped out of school to help her family. She said she was a good worker and employee but now wants to be in charge.
Monica is a tribal member and has been in and out of school since 2009. She has always wanted to be an entrepreneur. She has three children and is a role model for them. She is a member of the student government and likes studying marketing and investments. She said, “investments in me are an investment in my community.”
We got to speak with Estabon Hayes, whom I consider the most successful NWIC entrepreneur. He was a JSF scholar and owned and operated a very successful business. He provided fresh squeezed lemonade to many large venues around the state of Washington. Since then, he has added a garment printing business and an Eco Camping business and owns several ice machines. He would be a perfect candidate for a story of success.
We briefly discussed graduates and why it was essential for us to learn what the graduates have done.
AUDIT
I conducted an audit, and all files were in good order. Following the meeting, I gave Bobby a tour of the reservation.
