PROGRAM PROGRESS REPORTS
We began with introductions, and Mattie shared some interesting news. They were excited that the JSF Grant Program Committee had approved the endowment. She stated that on the same day, she received notice that the proposal to the Minority Development Agency (Department of Commerce) had been funded. This 2-year grant focused on a campus-wide business course development initiative and an expansion of the adjunct faculty pool. This will allow IAIA to review and restructure the business course offerings. She talked about the coursework and that IAIA uses the “Indianpreneurship” textbook and curriculum. Several tribal colleges are using this textbook.
In the spring of 2022, they added a business tutor to the IAIA Learning Lab. This allows students to have access to a special business tutor.
Dr. Jessie Ryker-Crawford, a faculty member at IAIA, assessed two of the business courses at IAIA (Business Communication BUSN 120 and Business and Entrepreneurship BUSN 140). The results from the students’ responses noted that the importance of students’ business plans focused on supporting community needs was vital for the students. In addition, the assessment showed that students believed social justice was essential to business values and decision-making.
Melanie Buchleiter, the registrar, announced that IAIA was developing a significant relationship with Nike. It started as a conversation about designs and quickly moved into a comprehensive relationship that will include intern opportunities at Nike. We need to continue to monitor this relationship.
DESK AUDIT
I conducted a desk audit and found that one student who had been previously funded did not receive funding for this semester. They explained that the student had received full funding from her Tribe and was no longer eligible.
ENDOWMENT
We had a brief discussion about the endowment and that we would have the agreement ready sometime in the next couple of weeks.
