This meeting was requested by FAU as a follow-up to JSF’s June 2nd meeting in Tampa with Kris Webb and Michelle Shaw to discuss the PACKS program. Almost immediately after that meeting, Michelle reached out to Larry Faerman, her supervisor, to discuss how FAU might become a pilot school for PACKS. With his blessing, she next reached out to her staff and then others on campus, including Career Services, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and the Associate Directors of several of the colleges on FAU’s campus that would be involved. She said the response has been overwhelmingly favorable. Joining Michelle on the call were Karen Gough, who leads Career Services for all 6 FAU campuses, and Geoffrey Johnson, SeniorDirectorforAcademicAffairs. Michelle reported that the current timeline for potential implementation is Fall 2023, and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies has some ideas regarding assessment. Michelle was interested in knowing what the next steps with JSF would be.
For the benefit of those new to JSF, Bobby provided a brief recap of how the discussion began at the 2021 Disability Convening and progressed to this point. He emphasized that JSF doesn’t typically bring ideas to organizations, but this was a unique opportunity. He then explained the next step would be the LOI process. Bobby encouraged the FAU team to make the program its own as they work to formulate the LOI. Kris added that she sees the PACKS program as a blueprint, and she would make herself available throughout the process.
Michelle spoke about how she will have an opportunity during her meetings with students early in the year to identify candidates for the program. There was a discussion about how the program can help students find the right careers. Karen explained that FAU is implementing an interest inventory called Major Knowledge that will help students identify personal interests and their relationships to career pathways. In addition, new state guidelines are requiring that all students complete career readiness training. She added that FAU also offers a professional development course centered around 8 career skills. There are also new options for students to complete internships.
As the call concluded, Larry thanked JSF for the consideration. He mentioned that the University’s president, John Kelly, is stepping aside at the end of this calendar year. Changes have also taken place recently in the leadership ranks of the FAU Foundation. He simply wanted to make JSF aware of those facts. Bobby invited Michelle and others to reach out if they have questions in the coming weeks. The FAU representatives then left the call.
Afterward, Kris asked the JSF team whether a meeting would be forthcoming to USF, the other school that had been presented with the PACKS opportunity. Bobby advised her USF has not reached out as of yet. At this time, we will wait to hear from them.
