Program Notes (2)
• Entrepreneurship program schools
Notifications have gone out to all 13 schools that the applications are now open in our on-line system and due by June 15th.
• Institute of American Indian Arts
IAIA has completed spending the funds granted to them in 2020 in response to COVID needs. (See report attached.)
• Site visits
Bobby, Mike and Rick visited Aaniiih Nakoda College and Salish Kootenai College. While in Montana, they also met with Prairie Bighorn-Blount from AIBL. (See reports attached.)
DISCRETIONARY PROGRAMS
• Distributions as of June 15, 2022: $1,382,354
• Elevation Scholars
Scott Lee reported a good year for Elevation Scholars, though COVID and the unexpected departure of a new hire impacted their results. (See report attached.)
• Mount Allison University
Jeff Wright, who has served as Executive Director of Development at Mount Allison University, has accepted a position with the University of New Brunswick at Fredericton, another JSF grantee. Courtney Pringle-Carver, Vice President for Advancement at Mount Allison, and Beth Swarbrigg, Assistant Director of Development, will continue Jeff’s fundraising work on behalf of students with disabilities at Mt A.
• PACKS
On Thursday afternoon, prior to the annual SUSF meeting, Bobby, Bea, King, Lady and Sharon along with Kris Webb met with Michelle Shaw of Florida Atlantic University and then with Deborah McCarthy of University of South Florida to introduce the PACKS concept. Both were receptive to the idea and are looking into the possibility of piloting the project at their schools. (See report on these two meetings attached.)
• Providence St. Mel
The latest PSM newsletter included a nice shout out to the Foundation. (See attached.)
• Take Stock/Johnson Scholars
Lady and Sharon represented the Foundation at the graduation ceremony where Lady spoke. The event celebrated 124 seniors and featured remarks from Superintendent Mike Burke and Keith Oswald, Chief of Equity and Wellness for the District.. Dr. Keven Allen, Director of First-Generation Student Success at Florida Atlantic University, delivered a moving and motivational keynote address.
• University of Florida
Dr. Leslie Pendleton has announced she is transitioning from her role as Senior Director of the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program. However, she will remain at UF and continue her support of first-generation students in her new position in the school’s University Advancement office. A search is under way to for a new Senior Director for the MFOS program.
