seniors, from various programs throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties.
- Next Era Energy Onsite Visit: In partnership with the FAU Career Center, we hosted several workshops and events with NextEra Energy, which is a local major corporation in Palm Beach County. The most significant was hosting 20 first-generation students in the accounting and finance majors for a full day site visit. As a result of our efforts, 3 students were offered jobs at NextEra Energy, one of them being apart of our Johnson Transfer Scholars Program.
- FAFSA Live Event: Nationally, there has been a steady decline in the completion of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Application. Furthermore, the state of Florida ranks 47th nation wide in FAFSA completion rate. In response to this, on October 1, we host a live FAFSA workshop where our financial aid office did a live walkthrough of completing the application. We had over 300 students and families attend this event and get their questions answered.
Request for a No-Cost Extension
During the 2-year period, we did face several challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic, staffing changes, and particular legislative decisions within the State, impacted our recruitment efforts of our RISE and UMI programs. As a result, we were left with a remaining balance of $22,655.59. We are requesting approval to use the remaining funds toward the following goals:
• Experiential Learning Opportunities: Company site visits, out-of-state internship cost/housing, research/Co-Ops opportunities: $7,000
• GAP Scholarships: Scholarships for first-generation juniors and seniors who need help to finish their degrees: $ 7,000.
• Co-Curricular Programming: Expansion of programs and services geared toward pre-collegiate and first-generation student engagement: $8,655.59.
- “I am a first-generation college student, and I am also a single mom. I am currently seven months pregnant and trying to complete my studies to provide a brighter future for my kids...it is an inspirational journey to pursue my dream of graduating from university with a bachelor’s degree in public, Global, and Environmental Health.... Thank you for your gratitude and kind gesture...of the support I needed to graduate. You have made a difference through your dedication and support to accomplish my dream.”
