FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY REPORT (7) JSF Final Impact Report June 2023
Fostering First-Generation Student Support through Holistic Support
At Florida Atlantic University, 30% of our undergraduate student population identifies as First-Generation.
While first-generation students are known nationally for having grit, persistence, and perseverance to successfully navigate challenges; research shows they also face financial, social, and academic roadblocks that cause a degree of inequity related to academic access and attainability. As a result, in October 2020, the Johnson Family Foundation granted Florida Atlantic University $100,000, in support of our project to expand the programs and services of our Office of First-Generation Student Success. The objectives of the project were the following:
1. To increase the impact on first-generation low-income students at Florida Atlantic University
2. Minimize Financial barriers that prevent matriculation.
3. Provide co-curricular opportunities that lead to internships, gainful employment, or
graduate school
4. Provide experiences that foster global perspectives and lead to personal growth.
The following report will be in two parts. Part 1 will outline the yearly goals and the success and challenges we had in each. Part 2 will discuss the budget categories and the successes that we had in each area.
Part 1: Goals, Objectives, Outcomes Overview
