SUSF ANNUAL MEETING REPORT (3)
Ideas and solutions to assist students in passing the exam included providing free workshops and webinars on campus for students. A survey in the room showed that not all schools offer a workshop. Advising departments can recommend that students take the exam after completing the course and not wait. Schools can use the course substitution process for the requirement through Section 1007.265. When practice exams with the students are offered, they tend to pass the exam. It was suggested that professors offer extra credit for practice exams during class to encourage the student to take the exam at the end of the semester.
Actions:
Perspective from the State University System
1. Are you experiencing issues with the FCLE?
2. What supports do you have in place? 3. What should the process look like? 4. Writing a process that all College and
Universities can follow
5. Having a universal guide
to FCLE substitution process 6. Review the CLAST policy on waivers/
substitution
7. Share recommendations with the
Florida Department of Education 8. Can Florida AHEAD give
a
recommendation to the state? 9. Suggest an amendment to the FCLE
requirement
Bea shared that one student failing the exam is
too many. Bea and Michelle have spoken with the State of Florida Department of Education. King shared that there are consequences to the students failing the exam.
What is the best practice to ensure the success of students with the exam? What suggestions can we give to Mike at the Department of Education?
Diego from the Board of Regents asked how common it is for students to fail? FAU shared they had 140 students take the exam, and ten students failed. FAU recognized a problem and wants to focus on students’ success. Other schools were researching the number of students who were not passing and would ask upon returning to campus. USF noted their instructors add the exam as a practice exam during the course for extra credit.
It was asked if a paper can be used in the place of the exam?
1. The discussion included who would grade the paper? Also, papers are subjective to the grader, and they may not understand that the student has a disability.
2. If students must take the course, we need to implement the next steps for students with disabilities to ensure they take and pass the exam at the end of the course.
Discussion from the attendees included Deb from USF, who asked if the state set the passing score requirement so low, then why require a passing score that is already a failing score? Can you ask for modifications to the exam? Students know the materials but deal with issues that impact their ability to take the exam and pass.
