UNIVERSITY OF NORTH FLORIDA REPORT (2)
2
On or before November 15, 2024, UNF Foundation will provide Johnson Scholarship Foundation with a report
on the use of funds to date and progress towards its goals.
ACCESS Academy underwent a major revision that began in the summer of 2022. This revision focused on
concentrating program content into three vital areas along with finding ways to make the program sustainable
for years to come. The program revision began with Dr. Dubberly and a research assistant conducting an
extensive literature review related to the goals of ACCESS Academy. The revised course content was created
based on the findings of the literature review. A group of subject area experts vetted each of the newly
developed learning modules. These experts were made up of UNF faculty from multiple departments on campus
who shared their knowledge in the areas of learning/studying strategies for students with disabilities, college
writing, and enhancing executive functioning skills, along with employability for students with disabilities,
navigating accommodations in the workplace, and coaching strategies.
Based on our research and input from subject matter experts, we created three new ACCESS courses: Academic
Strategies for College Success, Strategies for Career Readiness, and Organizational Skills and Goal Setting. To
accompany these courses, we developed a coaching model for our facilitators to use outside of classroom time
to assist students with the implementation of the learned strategies. The instructional model was redesigned to
a flipped classroom instructional strategy. The course content is now hosted on UNF’s Canvas learning
management system and students are expected to interact with the content before coming to their weekly in-
person class. The in-person class time is used to strengthen understanding of the strategies and discuss the
application of strategies to real world college and work settings. This instructional model has shown to be
effective and preferred by students participating in the Access Academy program.
Year three Goals
Goal 1: The final activity will be to continue to explore the extent to which Access Academy can be
sustained by UNF. Positions in the SAC will be examined to determine which roles and responsibilities
could be reasonably added to positions (e.g., administrative functions, mentoring) and which roles and
responsibilities might move to another area of the college (e.g., coursework).
The administrative structure of Access Academy was changed in 2022 to create a long-term
sustainability plan for the program. The SAC Director now oversees all administrative duties for the
program as part of his full-time position as Director. The program hires one part-time course
facilitator/coach who oversees teaching the courses and working with students to ensure appropriate
skill implementation. Student award payments of $200 are the only other program expenses. The
facilitator compensation and student awards are currently budgeted at an estimated $25,000 to
$30,000 annually.
Goal 2: Investigate resource allocation, use of graduate students for training purposes, scholarships, etc.to
move closer to a sustainable program. Goal: Refine the sustainability plan for Access Academy.
The current program model is highly sustainable over the next decade due to low annual costs in
conjunction with generous gifts provided by the Johnson Scholarship Foundation and Michael Ward
and Jennifer Glock Foundation. The new Access Academy model only requires one part-time facilitator
on payroll which greatly maximizes the sustainability of program funds. Access Academy will continue
to partner with COEHS graduate programs to utilize grad students to facilitate courses.
