COURSE DESCRIPTION

               Faculty-led study abroad program in Music. Topics may center on cultural studies, performance, or
               music research. Locations of study vary. May be repeated for credit under different topics. Prerequisites:
               instructor approval and application through the Office of International Studies and Programs.


                                              STUDENT LEARNER OUTCOMES
               Advanced understanding of the development of classical music through the lens of the history and
               culture of 19th and 20th century Paris and through the influence of the Paris Conservatory. Assessed
               through written work and seminar discussions.

               Competencies:
                   •  critical perspective and detailed knowledge of key figures who helped to establish, shape and
                       promote the Paris Conservatory as a leading music education institute
                   •  synthesize intersections between musical aesthetics, French post-revolutionary history, and
                       works of contemporary art and architecture
                   •  develop and exercise basic French language skills, and/or build on existing skills


                                         COURSE ASSIGNMENTS & ASSESSMENTS
               Students will meet monthly throughout the spring term to prepare for the travel experience.
               Discussions will include how to prepare for an international trip, French customs, basic conversational
               and reading French and a summary overview of the topics that will be explored more in depth upon
               arrival.

               During the abroad portion of the class students will have assigned readings in preparation for each day’s
               topic, and each will be responsible for leading one seminar discussion, supplementing the day’s lecture.
               Most days will feature one focused topic lecture paired with an excursion to a museum or monument,
               illustrating the day’s topic.

               In addition, each student will be required to keep journals of the day’s readings and of each day’s
               experience to be submitted upon return to TAMUK.


                                                         GRADING
               EXCURSIONS AND DISCUSSIONS (60%)
               This course runs as a seminar in which everyone contributes generously to daily discussions and to the
               excursions. Thoughtful participation and active engagement with the readings are assumed. We will
               meet each day as a group to discuss the day’s readings and related activities. The remainder of our time
               will be devoted to excursions in and around Paris, such as visits to renowned music venues, museums,
               and historical sites. Attendance at all meetings and group activities is required unless otherwise noted
               by the instructor. Any unexcused absence will result in the reduction of the student’s final grade as
               determined by the instructor. Multiple absences may lead to expulsion from the course at the student’s
               expense per the policies of the Office of International Studies and Programs.
