READING JOURNAL (20%)
The reading journal is intended to foster critical engagement with the assigned texts and will help you
prepare to participate in discussions. While reading, you are encouraged to consider the following:

               • What is the aim of the article?
               • Does it impart a broad overview or present a focused discussion of a narrower topic?
               • What are the key arguments and conclusions put forward by the author?
               • What types of evidence does the author use to support his or her claims?
               • What perspective does the author offer (ie. was he/she a contemporary of the events, looking
                       back with historical perspective, etc.)

               For each article write
               (1) a brief summary identifying the author’s main points and central argument, and
               (2) a personal response, e.g. what you liked about the essay, questions it raised for you, etc.

Grading will be based on comprehension of the material and clarity of expression. All entries must be
completed in order to receive credit.

               TRAVEL JOURNAL (20%)
You will also keep a journal of your daily activities in which you reflect on your experiences as they
pertain to travel and life in Paris. Your impressions and perceptions are more important than a mere
list of activities. Possible topics for reflection include performances you attended, your observations of
the city of Paris and its citizens, impressions of monuments and museums we attend, and/or new foods
you experienced. Update your journal daily while the ideas are still fresh. You should expect to average
about a page a day. Students are encouraged to write in French whenever possible, either exercising
existing language skills, or applying new words/phrases acquired that day.
