Demonstration: Alkali Earth metals

Alkali Earth Metals: These elements have 2 electrons in their

outer shell, they will still react with water to make a metal

hydroxide but at a much slower rate.

Demonstration: We will place Magnesium into a test tube

with water and observe that it doesn’t react straight away.
Gently heat over a blue flame. Use phenolphthalein again to

observe that a metal hydroxide has been produced.

Discussion: Explain why alkali earth metals react with water
at a slower rate than group 1.
