Purpose of the Guide
The purpose of this guide is to provide educators, within higher education institutions, with
an easy-to-use knowledge resource, on how to effectively create and implement formal
learning groups within their classrooms.
The guide offers strategies and tools that will enhance instructional practices and refocus
attention on the benefits of collaborative learning through formal learning groups. The
strategies discussed, and the tools offered within this guide are informed by research,
theory, and best practices on the functionality of formal learning groups within higher
education institutions.
The guide is divided into three chapters which give users an understanding of collaborative
learning and how formal learning groups can be created and effectively managed. Alongside
these chapters are supportive resources to further expound on the creation and
