Chapter 1: Overview of Collaborative Learning

                             LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this chapter you should be able to:

 Explain the concept collaborative learning

 Explain theories on collaborative learning
 Select and use a collaborative learning strategy in the
                                      classroom

               What is collaborative learning?
                                                                             THEORIES ON COLLABORATIVE

Within the constructs of the sociocultural theory,

Vygotsky argues that knowledge is socially constructed and rooted within the social context.
In such contexts, learning is mediated through interaction between an individual and other

people within his or her environment. (Lin, 2015) These interactions are encouraged in

collaborative settings which enhance the learner’s cognitive abilities and foster deep

               learning.

An early definition of collaborative learning characterizes it as the application of a variety of

instructional strategies which involves students working with students or teachers and

students working collectively. In this learning exchange, groups of two or more students

“mutually search for understanding, solutions or meanings, or creating a product.” (Smith &

               MacGregor, 1992, p. 10)

Collaborative learning is anchored in five fundamental principles which guide its
implementation within the classroom. They are:

                                                                                                              7
