What is collaborative learning?
THEORIES ON COLLABORATIVE
Collaborative learning is ingrained in social LEARNING
constructivist perspectives which are seen through Lev Some of the main theories
supporting collaborative learning
Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. (Davidson & Major,

Theories.
Within the constructs of the sociocultural theory,
Vygotsky argues that knowledge is socially constructed and rooted within the social context.
In such contexts, learning is mediated through interaction between an individual and other
people within his or her environment. (Lin, 2015) These interactions are encouraged in
collaborative settings which enhance the learner’s cognitive abilities and foster deep
