Meteorology
When the wind turns and comes from a higher degree, we say the wind is
veering.
In connection with wind gusts, the wind will often
veer (turn to the right / come from a higher degree).
When the wind turns and comes from a lower
degree, we say the wind is backing.
More on this when we look at front systems.
3.4.8.4 Wind sock
A windsock shows the wind direction and speed if the wind
is calm.
Here, you can see a 25 Kt windsock (5 cells), where the first
two cells are horizontal = 10 Kt (approx.).
If the wind is, for example, 15 Kt, the first three cells will be horizontal, and the
two outermost cells will bend downward.
