Meteorology

When the wind turns and comes from a higher degree, we say the wind is

                veering.

In connection with wind gusts, the wind will often

veer (turn to the right / come from a higher degree).

When the wind turns and comes from a lower

degree, we say the wind is backing.

More on this when we look at front systems.

                3.4.8.4 Wind sock

A windsock shows the wind direction and speed if the wind

                is calm.

Here, you can see a 25 Kt windsock (5 cells), where the first

two cells are horizontal = 10 Kt (approx.).

If the wind is, for example, 15 Kt, the first three cells will be horizontal, and the

two outermost cells will bend downward.
