Aircraft general knowledge
However, the air intake can be blocked by ice.
Some aircraft are equipped with a spring-loaded
damper, as shown in the illustration, which
automatically opens for air supply from the
engine compartment.
Not all engines are equipped with the
system, but most engines with an
injection system are.
In the section in the red ring above, the
carburetor preheater is closed.
In the section in the machine, the
carburetor preheater is opened.
8.9.4.5 Cowl flaps
Some aircraft are equipped with cowl flaps, which are operated via levers in the
machine.
These regulate the amount of air for cooling the engine.
High-performance aircraft need to be able to
regulate the engine temperature during flight.
During take-off and climb, the cowl flaps must be
opened.
During take-off and climb, the speed is relatively
low, and it is necessary that the cooling is good, so the cowl flaps are open.
During cruise flights at high speed, the engine will not reach ideal operating
temperature unless the cold air is slightly closed off.
