                9.9.2.2     The ADF receiver


                Here is a typical ADF.


                The  pointer  shows  the  relative

                bearing to the beacon.

                The inner scale can be turned with the HDG (heading) button.




                (The pointer still retains its position, even if the scale is turned with the knob.

                This  allows  you  to  set  the  aircraft's  magnetic  heading  and  set  it  where  N  is

                indicated. You can then directly read the magnetic bearing to the radio beacon)





                This  ADF  is  combined  with  a  display  instrument,  which  you  can  set  to  the
                beacon's frequency (here 0 2 3 6).


                Below the display instrument there are some buttons (in the red rectangle),

                which are also used in connection with bearing - you will hear about them during

                the chapter.




                It can be a little difficult to understand how bearing is done, so here is some basic

                knowledge and some examples.


                The  pointer  on  the  instrument  will  always  point  towards  the  radio  beacon,
                regardless of where you are in relation to the beacon, and what course you are

                flying.
