Navigation

Your course towards the beacon and the course from the beacon towards you is

always opposite. So, if you know one, you also know the other. This is the

knowledge we use when we get a bearing from a beacon.

Here are a few other examples:

Aircraft B and C are flying directly

                towards the beacon.

Aircraft E is flying directly away from

                the beacon.

Aircraft A and D both need to turn to

                reach the beacon.

A need to turn right, while D needs to turn left.

                9.9.2.3 Navigation by beacon

The pilot wants to steer directly towards the radio beacon. There is no wind.

                Which QDM should the pilot

                follow?

The heading gyro (on the left)
                                           o
                shows a heading of 030 .

The ADF indicator (on the right) shows the relative bearing to the radio beacon.

The indicator shows that the aircraft needs to turn 230 degrees to the right to
                reach the radio beacon.

                                                            o
                                                                                      o
                                                                                            o
                                                                                                    o
                Since the aircraft is already steering 30 , it needs to steer 230 + 30 = 260 .
