Navigation
The indicator instrument typically looks like this below.
To the right of the arrow is the "flag-warning" tab.
If NAV is not indicated, the VOR station is out of range or
out of service.
The TO/FROM indicator says TO.
At the top you can see that there is 360 to the station (the arrow points N). If
you look below the arrow, you can read which radial you are on (S / 180).
With the OBS- (Omni Bearing Selector) knob you can rotate the compass scale.
If you rotate the scale 180⁰, so that S is at the top, the TO/FROM indicator will
change to FROM (FR).
The FROM indication shows the radial
The TO indication shows the course line to the VOR station.
From any position you can get 2 pieces of information:
- The direction to the station
- The direction from the station
You fly to the station with a TO indication.
You fly from the station with a FROM indication.
Across the middle of the indicator, we see some dots. These
dots represent degrees.
We call this scale the CDI (Course Deviation Indicator). It can show if you deviate
from the set course.
